Chicagos Elite: Prairie Landing
This season Golf Chicago! is highlighting what we believe are Chicagos Elitethe top public courses in the area. These are the best of the best in design, playability, service, amenities and overall experience. Every one of these courses is a joy to play and is remembered long after the last putt on the 18th hole. Prairie Landing Golf Club
The first time you drive into Prairie Landing Golf Club, you know that Robert Trent Jones Jr. had a certain vision a vision of a natural course touched by modern design.
Some would call it a links layout or Scottish links course. But truly, it is not. Not in the traditional sense. One might instead call it an American links coursea design that combines marshes, wetlands, trees on only four holes, and natural terrain along with dramatic shaping and contouring to give Prairie Landing a feel and look like no other in the Chicago area.
Prairie Landing also takes a unique approach to amenities. A superb practice area and grand clubhouse add to the marvelous experience of playing Prairie Landing. Plus there is also one very special feature you wont find at any other facility in the Chicago areaPrairie Landing has three full-length practice holes. The depth of service and amenities may be unmatched in Chicagoland.
With the grand country club atmosphere that Prairie Landing exudes, it is important to add that the course also has what some might call a quaintness. How is that? Because the course sits between the DuPage County airport and the Metra Northwest rail line, it is not unusual to see a small plane fly over during your round or to hear a lonely train whistle as the clanking of the cars moves in waves across the landscape. This, many believe, adds to the wonderful ambiance of Prairie Landing.
The train really is a part of this golf course. Students of golf architecture are aware that along many layouts in the British Isles it is not at all unusual to watch a train make its way through the links. That part of the Scottish tradition is certainly a part of Prairie Landing Golf Club. Its just another ingredient that makes it a wonderful place to play the game and such a distinctive masterpiece.
