Golf Chicago! Golf-away Destinations

3...2...1...Ignition, the home of the Johnson Space Center, NASA, world famous Texas barbecue and great golf, all in the fourth largest city in America...Houston, Texas.

Star Trek’s sixth movie titled “The Undiscovered Country” best describes this new and vibrant city of the future. Houston is home to over 4 million people of more than 100 different nationalities and encompasses a patch of land half the size of Rhode Island.

Everything here is big and new! A new stadium for each of their pro sports teams and the 2004 Superbowl! In addition, they’ve built big new convention facilities to rival Chicago, a big new Intercontinental airport project, big new expressways and some of the nations best new golf courses in America.

Located in the shadows of the downtown skyline, The Houstonian Hotel & Spa has come to mean luxury, elegance and world-class service. In keeping with that tradition, The Houstonian is proud to announce the addition of The Houstonian Golf Club designed by renowned golf course marchitect Rees Jones. This past year, Golf Digest named The Houstonian one of the “Top 10” new golf courses in America. This wonderful course is located in the wide-open spaces of the Texas prairie about thirty minutes west of the hotel and downtown Houston.

Jones has transformed this Texas cattle grazing land into a wonderful 7,100 yard public course, with rolling Bermuda fairways and large state-of-the-art Tif-Eagle greens. When the prairie winds come up this course becomes a real test. An example is the 464-yard par-4 eighteenth. A long straight tee shot into the wind is required to avoid the Texas-sized bunker (137 yards long) on the right. Then a long second to an elevated green surrounded by bunkers. I was playing with your publisher and mine, Bill Daniels. We both hit drivers off the tee into a 25 mph wind and fairway woods for our second shots. He sank his 20 footer for a world class birdie and I came up one inch short for mine. Hey! He's my boss, I had to let him win on the last hole!

The city of Houston has seven public golf courses as part of it’s Parks and Recreation Department, including it's completely renovated flagship course, the Memorial Park Golf Course. Green fees at Houston's public courses are unbelievable. Houston's most expensive city course, the newly renovated Memorial Park Golf Course will set you back a whopping $8.00 for seniors and $22.50 for out-of-towners!

Memorial Park is a fantastic public course with beautiful Spanish Moss draped trees throughout, and (except for the Spanish Moss) reminds me a lot of The Village Links of Glen Ellyn. It’s tough too! Not your typical city course. After warming up on the front nine, the back starts out with a 455 yard par four, a 238 yard par three and a 475 yard par four. Then a few ”easy holes” including a 600 + yard par five! How this great course has only a 129 slope rating is beyond me! With these green fees, Memorial Park Golf Course may very well be the best city course value in America!

How many of you have played Augusta National, home of the Masters? I don't see any hands. Would you like too? Well, I may not be able to get you onto Augusta National, but I found the next best thing, it's called the Tour 18. Now you can experience the exhilaration of America's greatest 18 holes, all on one course. Tour 18 has reproduced some of the most famous holes in golf all on one course. This 18 hole championship course is located only 10 minutes from the airport and features replicas of such famous holes as the 18th at Harbour Town, the 14th at Pebble Beach, the 17th island green at Sawgrass and the par-4 18th at Doral.

Augusta National is represented with three of their most famous holes at “Amen Corner”, the 455 par-4 11th, the 155 yard par-3 12th and the 465 yard dog-leg left par -5 13th. This may be America's most unique and amazing 18 holes of golf.

Houston is also home to NASA and the Johnson Space Center, only 20 miles south of downtown. After golf, tour Mission Control, see and touch moon rocks and check out the Space Shuttle. The kids (and you) will love it! There's no better place to stay and golf while visiting NASA or the Gulf beaches than the nearby four star South Shore Harbour Resort & Conference Center.

The South Shore Golf Club is where many of the Astronauts call home and boasts 27 holes with wide-open Bermuda fairways, palm trees and white sand bunkers.

Houston is also home to the PGA Tour’s Shell Houston open at the TPC Woodlands in April. The Woodlands Resort and Conference Center is located just 20 miles north of the city and offers 36 holes in all, with their TPC course being ranked one of the “Top 100” courses you can play by Golf Digest Magazine.

Golf in Houston is a year-round activity with temperatures that average 70 degrees. Like the weather, Texans are also very warm and friendly. Add in some international cuisine, NASA, world class museums & art exhibits, festivals, historical attractions, and you've got one heck of a spring break vacation.
